 2014 Easter Vigil Candle - Catholic Lutheran Shared Lighting

For the second consecutive year, St. Gertrude parish and Immanuel Lutheran parish (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) shared a common fire for the lighting of the Easter Vigil candle.   This sort of ecumenical event had been a long-time hope of St. Gertrude pastor Fr. Dominic Grassi, who proposed that this take place in both 2013 and in 2014. For the start of the Holy Saturday service in both 2013 and 2014, a small delegation from St. Gertrude walked the six blocks from St. Gertrude to Immanuel Lutheran where the pastors of both churches presided over a brief 5-10 minute service lighting the fire.

 

After the lighting of the Easter Vigil candle from the shared flame, a group of about ten volunteers from St. Gertrude parishioner carried the flame back to the church to the start of the 7:30 PM St. Gertrude Easter Vigil service.  As they walked a leader proclaimed “Christ is the Light the World” to which the group would respond with the following refrains:
